All Saints, Eastchurch

Posted on the 9th February 2014 in the category Latest News

The bells were ringing when Bishop Norman arrived at All Saints Eastchurch on the Isle of Sheppy (not another overseas trip!) but in Kent, for their Family Service, also attended by members of the Scout Group. The Bishop presided and preached at the Mass in the ancient parish church, set in the heart of the small village of Eastchurch. Fr Chris Shipley is the Rector and his wife Pauline is Head Teacher of the local school. After the Eucharist Fr Chris presented a bouquet and gift to Mrs Sonya Gowdy the retiring Captain of the Belfry. (Photo by Anthony Padman)

S Mary the Elms

A Mass of Dedication in the beautifully re-decorated church of Saint Mary the Elms Ipswich was celebrated on Saturday 9th November, 2 years after the disasterous fire which started in the tower and threatened to destroy the whole building. Fortunately the fire was quickly spotted and prompt action was taken by parishoners and local people, but not before considerable damaged had been caused by fire and smoke, blackening the entire interior of this ancient and historic building.

A much loved feature in the church is the restored image of Our Lady of Grace, the original of which was rescued by sailors in the early years of the Reformation and continues to be venerated in the coastal town of Netunno, south of Romein Italy. Friends from Nettuno led by one of their priests, the Passionist Father, Don Piero, made a special journey from Italy to share in the celebration.

The photo shows Bishop Norman with Fr Stephen Raine, the parish priest, together with Fr John Burrows, in front of the image of Our Lady of Grace. As they say in Nettuno, 'E Viva, Maria!'  (Photo by Guy Marshall, Bishop's PA)
